To promote the commercialization of new and existing research for the travel and tourism industry, five pre-existing Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) business entities have merged up and formed a company called EC3 Global.

These business entities are the National Centre for Studies in Travel and Tourism (trading as Sustainable Tourism Services), Decipher Technologies, Green Globe, Earth-check and Sustainable Tourism Holdings.

EC3 Global is a Queensland-based group that helps businesses around the world deal with ecotourism and sustainability issues through research links. It offers the skills that can help companies set up sustainable ways of doing business, test them and even achieve internationally recognized certification.

Green Globe is a program for business to measure and monitor its environments and social performance. It is among the products managed by the company.

Binna Burra Lodge, O’Reillys Rainforest Guesthouse, Cairns Sky Rail and the 11 Saville properties in Australia now owned by MFS’s Stella Resorts has already adopted the certification program of the company.

The company has 25 staff in Japan and China and is hoping to open an office in London in the next six months. More cooperation among the states and territories on sustainability issues is also anticipated.
