The beauty and elegance of whales and dolphins have always fascinated us. Watching whales is promoted as an important means of increasing the environmental awareness of the public.

The Canary Islands has large number of whale and dolphin species. Based on environmental education and research a proposal has been made by the government of Canary Island that the group of volcanic islands (Canaries, the Azores, Madeira, las Salvajes and Cape Verde) to be declared a sanctuary for cetaceans.

This November the International Conference for the protection of Dolphins will take place in Tenerife. The proposal by Canary Island Government will be presented in the conference, which will be held to mark the celebrations for the International Year of Dolphins. The representatives from Spain, Portugal and African countries will attend the conference.
