Bokito the gorilla leapt from his enclosure and seized a woman visiting the Rotterdam Zoo, injuring her quite badly. She has visited the ape almost every day since his arrival at the zoo a year and a half ago. So then, what prompted him to do so?
Did he fall in love with her? Probably, not all he wanted was to integrate her into his group, the way he mauled her, is his gorilla manner of initiation. Though the attack did not deter the woman from visiting the gorilla again and that too about four times a week despite suffering a broken arm and wrist and around 100 bites.
In a poll published some days after the accident, some 33 percent of those surveyed said the victim was responsible. About 25 percent blamed the zoo.
Zoos: Animals entrapped behind closed cages while humans pay to check them out. Some zoos are in nefarious conditions with animals underfed or plain neglected while others help encourage conservation programmes. This attack makes me wonder yet again at the plight of the caged animals. What do you think?
