LA-based design studio and manufacturer Eco-shack has redesigned the traditional yurt, used in the nomadic cultures of Central Asia. SCI-Arc Faculty member and Eco-shack founder Stephanie Smith is the designer of this Nomad.

Smith used materials reduction approach. Many of the materials used to make the Nomad are green, including bamboo, WeatherMAX, and Plyboo.

You just have to shell $6,800 USD to get an eco-friendly kit containing everything you need to construct this most advanced yurt. The yurt has beautifully sealed and sanded platform floor surface. If you feel the need of Weather-Max cover to keep the rain out, you have to spend $1,500 extra.

You can put one up yourself in about an hour and you don’t need to conquer anybody to call them home.

If you wish to build your own yurt, there are plenty of online resources to make a cheaper version of the Nomad. Dan Kuehn’s Mongolian Cloud Houses: How to Make a Yurt and Live Comfortably can tell you how to build your own yurt.
