You do get to howl your wild wolf call on this one. But there is no surety that wolves will come and join you. Though you could strain your ears for a distant response.

Wolves have always fascinated man maybe it stems from human love for dogs or the mystique of half man half wolf movies. The end of it is that wolf howling safaris rock. The red wolf coalition is trying to promote red wolf recovery through education, outreach, and research. And they are doing this pretty well till the navy inter feared.

Location: The Red Wolf Coalition, Post Office Box 96,Columbia, North Carolina
Attraction: Verbal dance with the wolves

These safaris have become popular possible because red wolves, one of the world’s most endangered animals, have slowly repopulated the peat bogs and pine thickets of Eastern North Carolina in the past two decades. But the navy now has major plans for this area.

Kim Wheeler, who is executive director of the Red Wolf Coalition says:

There is something very mystical that people associate with wolves, I hear a lot of stories from people who say they have looked into the eyes of wolves, and the wolves looked into their souls.

The safaris, which are limited to 100 people, require reservations. They are held weekly in summer and sporadically in other seasons.

In the midst of this land the Navy wants to convert 30,000 acres in Washington and Beaufort counties into a runway where jets can simulate night landings on aircraft carriers. This is sure to jeopardize the wolves future. Jet noises will be loud and recurrent, enough to disturb the animals’ communications. Wolves depend on howls to find mates, maintain territories and communicate with other pack members. You got it right by howling you become a member of their pack.

How did the red wolves become endangered? Well most were killed as nuisances until they were declared extinct in the wild by 1980 and now that their numbers have been restored by breeding the government interferes.

Any disruption in the wolves’ recovery and the annual migration of waterfowl to this area would also destroy a small eco-tourism industry that has slowly grown around them. Well if you are not a tourist to this region, do join in to help protect the red wolf population from being wiped out.
