Greenland institute of Natural Resources and Danish Polar Centre are running the project to understand the migration of the walruses. To determine the effect of hunting, oil exploration and climate change on the animals, they will be tracked for two months off west Greenland.

Global Positioning System (GPS) technology will be employed to know the exact location of the summer hide way of the west Greenland’s walruses.

Danish team will leave the port of Sisimiut, traveling north along the coast and within two weeks 10 satellite tags will attached to walruses.

Using cross bow or CO2-powdered gun the device will be deployed. A signal will beamed up to the satellite when tagged creatures emerge from the water which will help determining the walruses’ coordinates.

The tagging experiment will run over a number of years. The satellite data will be up on the BBC News website in the next couple of weeks. If this project proves successful it will be easier to understand the whereabouts of the great beasts.
