Forest fires can cause extreme damage and loss in terms of forests, resources and biodiversity. It is most unfortunate if the forests fires are a result of human activity. That seems to be the case in Marmaris‘ where the main source of income for the city is tourism.
Governor office officials are quoted to have said:
If we ban all safari tours, there will be a great loss to tourism in Marmaris, which is going through hard times anyway. So we will allow safaris to continue.
Tourists have been banned from smoking on safari in a desperate attempt to prevent new forest fires. It is probably because of discarded cigarettes and glass bottles that bad fires destroyed the forests across the Aegean and Mediterranean region.
