I thought salt was useful only to make food more appetizing for human consumption, but the Stockholm wildlife park have invited Moose and reindeer to a bizarre taste jury panel that will help decide which type of salt should be used to de-ice the country’s roads in wintertime.
The less the animals like it the better it will be. After all, we don’t want them to come onto the roads and get hit by oncoming traffic.
The National Road Administration plans to introduce a new, sweeter blend of road salt, but wants to make sure it doesn’t attract wildlife to Sweden’s highways and so they want to test it out.
The 14 hoofed jury members at Stockholm’s Skansen open-air museum will be served with two salt blocks, one with the new sugary flavor and another tasting like the road salt being used today. The project is expected to start in about a week and last for around two months. Hopefully the project will help prevent Traffic accidents involving wildlife which are fairly common on Sweden’s highways.

This is a very interesting experiment. Good to see the Swedish authorities are considering the needs of wildlife when making such decisions. Elk strikes are a common problem on the Swedish roads, and any attempt to reduce casualties is very welcome.
